Specialty Glass Microfiber

Specialty glass microfiber media have unique material properties that may include: binderless, acrylic binder, organic binder, laminated, double laminated and hydrophobic. They also have efficiencies that range from medium to ultra high. Specific applications are listed in the specialty glass microfiber grade descriptions below.


D-23® Whole Blood Separation Media:  The Grade D-23® is a point of care diagnostics borosilicate glass microfiber filter media containing a proprietary acrylic binder system. This customizable material represents a platform of product variants. The base glass media is supplied ready for your application of chemistries. When supplied as a whole blood separator a novel coating technology is utilized which yields high quality plasma with surprising efficacy and no red cell Hemolysis . The coated version material has been developed by a CRO in the United States whose specialty is blood separation and device development. This market proven media is currently included as a component in successfully commercialized and patented devices with 510K filings.

This naturally hydrophilic material demonstrates high uniformity in formation and density allowing reliable migration rates, in both cross and lateral flow applications. With little caliper deviation the media is ideal for challenging lamination applications and micro fluidic devices.

Uniform screen & felt sides with consistent density MD/CD - This media demonstrates excellent lot-to-lot reproducibility - CofC and CofA provided with shipments – Manufactured in an FDA approved facility and available as rolls, reels, sheets and semi-finished converted configurations in both pre and post coated versions.

This media is available as a base glass microfiber which performs basic whole blood separation via precisely engineered porosity and fiber matrix. In this configuration the material demonstrates plasma yield of approximately 15% by volume at nominal Hct range. It is suitable for both lateral and cross flow configurations and is highly consistent in density and caliper for application of your own micro-coating and dip/dry saturation chemistry.

3 versions of the blood separation media containing proprietary agglutinating chemistry coating is also available. In this coated version this material demonstrates plasma yield >40%.

A-83: Imagine the loading capacity of a binderless glass microfiber filter with the tightly regulated pore size
of a microfiltration membrane.

Now it's possible with Grade A83.

This new grade has a particle retention of 0.5µm.
It has >20x loading capacity of an equivalent porosity MCE or CN membrane and >15x the flow rate.

Back pressure is nearly non-existent in comparison to surface membranes.

Chemically inert, pure binderless borosilicate glass with no sizing additives or other surfactants. Low background noise in LC/GC/MS and very low extractables in presence of aggressive solvents.

There are many filter materials which make the claim of "nano-scale" fiber, but Grade A83 is tested by an independent laboratory using the latest in fiber analysis and SEM image quantification.

With >85% of the fiber content between 300nm -100nm, this material is truly one of the highest surface area binderless glass microfiber products on the market today.


B-85: This is a binderless, high efficiency (HEPA type) filter medium demonstrating retention rates of 1-2µm with high flow rate with high capacity. This media has been specifically designed for analytical applications and this borosilicate glass fiber media has no added extractables to aid in the elimination of sample contamination. Excellent wet strength. Common usage includes gravimetric analysis of air pollutants and membrane pre-filters. Also used for testing dissolved and suspended solids in wastewater.


RG: This laminated glass product is a high efficiency multi-purpose filter medium with good heat resistance. Demonstrating a retention rate of 1-2µm, it is particularly recommended for both gas and liquid filtration in the medical field and for monitoring applications. The base material consists of glass microfibers with 3-7% acrylic resin binder. The supporting scrim is a 0.5 oz/yd2 Reemay, a high strength spun bonded polyester nonwoven. The scrim can be applied to either side depending on the filter design. Also, the scrim is bonded to the glass media using a polyester hot melt which has a melting point of 325° F. This media has become the standard for monitoring the air in and around nuclear reactors and materials.


C-42: This is a high efficiency multi-purpose filter material demonstrating retention rates of 1-2µm with very good heat resistance. The basis weight and thickness are higher than normal to provide greater filter capacity. This grade is recommended for applications where some depth penetration and lower plugging rates are favored over surface removal of particulates. This material consists of borosilicate glass microfibers bonded with low amounts of acrylic resin.


E-13: This is a medium efficiency, high capacity filter medium demonstrating retention rates of 10-13µm and is suitable for applications requiring high air porosity or rapid liquid filtration. This grade is made from a blend of borosilicate glass microfibers, which are bonded by an acrylic resin. It is recommended for ASHRAE applications in the efficiency range of 90-95%.
